Octagon Room, Flamsteed House at Royal Observatory, Greenwich - This is one of the few surviving interiors by Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St Paul's Cathedral. A fine example of 17th century domestic architecture, it was originally called "the Star Room" or "Great Room". Its octagonal shape and thirteen-foot hight windows were designed for the long telescope used in 17th century. The room was used mainly for observing eclipses, comets and other unusual celestial events. |
